لَنْ وَكَيْ وَحَتَّى

More Reasons for the Subjunctive

Chapter Nineteen taught you أَنْ and لِـ, the two most common triggers of the subjunctive mood. This chapter completes that family: لَنْ, one of the most decisive words in the Qur'ān for denying that something will ever happen; كَيْ and لِكَيْ, both meaning ‘so that’; and a second, less obvious job for a preposition you already know — حَتَّى, which can mean ‘until’ as well as trigger the subjunctive when followed directly by a verb.

Watch out for: لَنْ، كَيْ، and حَتَّى each trigger the subjunctive for different reasons — don't let students memorise one blanket rule.
01 — THE FULL PICTURE, FIRST

رُكْنُ الْقَوَاعِدِGrammar Corner

The complete subjunctive family. Four particles push a present-tense verb into the subjunctive (نَصْب, ending ‑ـَ). You already know two of them.

لَنْ is stronger than لَا. Where لَا + present simply states a fact is not the case, لَنْ + subjunctive denies it will ever happen — a much firmer, more emphatic negation of the future.

لَنْ أَنْسَى
lan ansā
I will never forget — emphatic, decisive.

حَتَّى's two jobs. As a preposition (Chapter Thirteen), حَتَّى takes a genitive noun: حَتَّى الصَّبَاحِ (‘until morning’). Placed directly before a verb, it instead triggers the subjunctive, meaning ‘until’ or ‘so that’:

اجْلِسْ حَتَّى أُحَضِّرَ الشَّايَ
ijlis ḥattā uḥaḍdira-sh-shāy
Sit until I prepare the tea. (verb, subjunctive)

Quick check: what's the difference in strength between لَا أَذْهَبُ and لَنْ أَذْهَبَ? (لَا simply states ‘I don't go’; لَنْ emphatically denies I ever will — ‘I will never go.’)

ji’tu ilā huna kay ata’akkad.
I came here so that I could be sure.

اجْلِسِي حَتَّى أُحَضِّرَ لَكِ الشَّايَ.
ijlisī ḥattā uḥaḍdira laki-sh-shāy.
Sit until I prepare tea for you.
MARYAM
لَنْ أَرْفُضَ هَذَا الْعَرْضَ!
lan arfuḍa hādhā-l-‘arḍ!
I won't refuse that offer!
03 — CORE WORDS

الْمُفْرَدَاتُVocabulary

Each of these triggers the same subjunctive ending (‑ـَ) you learned in Chapter Nineteen.

One of the Qur'ān's most quoted uses of لَنْ — a firm, decisive statement about true righteousness.

لَن تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ
You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love.

Both particles from this chapter appear together: لَن makes تَنَالُوا decisively negative, and حَتَّى makes تُنفِقُوا subjunctive — ‘until you spend.’ This verse is one of the most frequently cited in discussions of Islamic charity.
