Part 5 · Chapter Forty-Four · Form VIII — افْتَعَلَ
افْتَعَلَ
Form VIII — Doing It for Yourself
Form VIII inserts a تْ after a root's first letter — اجْتَمَعَ, اخْتَلَفَ, اتَّقَى — and usually gives a reflexive sense: doing something for or to oneself, or simply undergoing a change of state. It's an extremely productive form, and it includes one of the single most important words in the entire Qur'ān: تَقْوَى, and the verb behind it, اتَّقَى.
Every Arabic passage has a small circle button — click it to hear it read aloud using your browser's own Arabic voice.
BY THE END OF THIS CHAPTER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
Recognise Form VIII's افْتَعَلَ pattern, with its inserted تْ after the first root letter
Produce all nine word-forms of a Form VIII verb from one root
Recognise اتَّقَى — a Form VIII verb whose spelling hides an assimilated و
Read a verse using اجْتَمَعَ, describing people or forces coming together
TEACHER NOTES
Pacing: 40–45 min
Prerequisite check: Form I and general reflexive awareness.
Watch out for: Form VIII's infixed ت is easy to miss visually in unvowelled text — drill root extraction explicitly.

Root ج-م-ع, Form VIII — اِجْتَمَعَ ‘to gather’
A special note on اتَّقَى. Its root is و-ق-ي (‘to protect, guard’); Form VIII would normally give اوْتَقَى, but Arabic doesn't like و followed directly by تْ, so the و assimilates fully into the تْ, doubling it: اتَّقَى. This is exactly the kind of irregularity Hans Wehr will show you directly — recognising the pattern matters more than deriving every form from scratch yourself.
جَمَعَ (I) → اجْتَمَعَ (VIII)
jama‘a → ijtama‘a he collected (something) → he gathered (himself, reflexively)
Form VIII's maṣdar is اِفْتِعَالٌ, always — compare اجْتِمَاعٌ and اخْتِلَافٌ.
Quick check: what does the noun تَقْوَى come from? (اتَّقَى, Form VIII of the root و-ق-ي, ‘to guard against.’)
02 — LISTEN & REPEAT
حِوَارٌDialogue
Yūsuf and Maryam talk about gathering together and differing opinions. Listen twice, then read aloud.
Look for the تْ inserted right after the first root letter — that's Form VIII's signature, even when it changes shape slightly next to certain letters.

04 — READING THE SOURCE
وَقْفَةٌ قُرْآنِيَّةٌQur'ān Connection
A verse using اجْتَمَعَ to describe the futility of created beings working together against Allah's power.
SŪRAT AL-ḨAJJ — 22:73 (EXCERPT)
لَن يَخْلُقُوا ذُبَابًا وَلَوِ اجْتَمَعُوا لَهُ
They will never create [even] a fly, even if they gathered together for it.
لَن يَخْلُقُوا
lan yakhluqū
they will never create
ذُبَابًا
dhubāban
a fly
وَلَوِ اجْتَمَعُوا لَهُ
wa lawi-jtama‘ū lah
even if they gathered together for it
اجْتَمَعُوا is exactly the Form VIII pattern from this chapter's sarf table, ‘they’ form. The verse humbles those who worship anything besides Allah, noting that even collectively, created beings couldn't create the simplest of creatures.
