Part 3 · Chapter Twenty-Seven · Governing Particles (العوامل)
الْمَجْزُومُ
The Jussive Mood — لَمْ and لَمَّا
You already know two of Arabic's three verb moods: the plain indicative (رَفْع, ending ‑ُ) and the subjunctive (نَصْب, ending ‑َ, triggered by أَنْ and لِـ in Chapter Nineteen). This chapter introduces the third and final one: the jussive (جَزْم), whose ending is سُكُون — no vowel at all. Its most common trigger, لَمْ, is how Qur'ānic and Classical Arabic prefers to negate the past tense, far more often than the مَا + past-tense pattern you learned early in this course.
Every Arabic passage has a small circle button — click it to hear it read aloud using your browser's own Arabic voice.
BY THE END OF THIS CHAPTER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
Recognise the jussive mood's سُكُون ending on a present-tense verb
Use لَمْ + jussive to negate the past tense — the Qur'ān's preferred form
Use لَمَّا to mean ‘not yet’
See the complete family of five jussive-triggering particles, and know what's coming next
Read a short sūrah built almost entirely on لَمْ
TEACHER NOTES
Pacing: 45–50 min
Prerequisite check: Present tense (Ch.9–10) and imperative (Ch.24).
Watch out for: The jussive looks identical to the present tense minus a final vowel — students need to hear, not just see, the difference.

The five jussive-triggering particles. Classical grammar recognises five particles that push a present-tense verb into the jussive mood. You'll meet all five across this chapter and the next — here's the complete family so you know the whole landscape before we go one at a time.

How the jussive ending works. Compare the same verb in all three moods:
هُوَ يَصِلُ
huwa yaṣilu He arrives. (indicative, رَفْع — default)
أُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصِلَ
urīdu an yaṣila I want him to arrive. (subjunctive, نَصْب — Ch.19)
لَمْ يَصِلْ
lam yaṣil— (no vowel) He didn't arrive. (jussive, جَزْم — this chapter)
For most verbs, jussive simply strips the final vowel. For the ‘you/we/they’ forms whose indicative ends in ـُونَ or ـِينَ, jussive drops the ن entirely: تَذْهَبُونَ → لَمْ تَذْهَبُوا. Note too that لَمْ + jussive is past in meaning even though the verb itself is present-tense in shape — this is the single most important pattern in this chapter.
Quick check: what is the jussive of يَكْتُبُ after لَمْ? (لَمْ يَكْتُبْ — he didn't write.)
02 — LISTEN & REPEAT
حِوَارٌDialogue

You're not late then, you have time.

04 — READING THE SOURCE
وَقْفَةٌ قُرْآنِيَّةٌQur'ān Connection
One of the shortest and most memorised sūrahs in the Qur'ān — built almost entirely on لَمْ.
He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.
لَمْ يَلِدْ
lam yalid
He did not beget
وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
wa lam yūlad
and was not born
وَلَمْ يَكُن
wa lam yakun
and there was not
لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
lahu kufuwan aḥad
to Him any equivalent
Three jussive verbs in two short verses: يَلِدْ, يُولَدْ (a passive imperfect, jussive-marked the same way), and يَكُن — the jussive of كَانَ, whose long vowel drops entirely in this mood (يَكُونُ → يَكُنْ). This closing pair of āyahs of Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ is one of the most repeated pieces of Qur'ān in the world.

Aḥmad checks in on Salmā's revision. Listen first, script second.
AḨMAD
هَلْ حَفِظْتِ السُّورَةَ الْجَدِيدَةَ؟
SALMĀ
لَمْ أَحْفَظْهَا كُلَّهَا بَعْدُ.

SALMĀ

Has Salmā memorised the whole new sūrah?
What does Aḥmad ask her?
Why hasn't she told him?
Reveal answers
1. No, not all of it yet. 2. Why she didn't tell him. 3. She doesn't yet feel ready to review.

التَّحَدُّثُSpeaking
Pair work
Partner drill. Ask your partner “هَلْ فَعَلْتَ كَذَا؟” about something ordinary, and answer with لَمْ + jussive instead of the مَا-negation you learned earlier.
Recycling round. Ask how your partner feels about tomorrow's lesson using أَشْعُرُ, then answer with a jussive-negated sentence.

Tip
رَفْع vs جَزْم
هُوَ يَصِلُ
لَمْ يَصِلْ
The whole difference between ‘he arrives’ and ‘he didn't arrive’ is that final vowel disappearing into silence.
1. False — he hasn't arrived yet. 2. True. 3. False — she says he's not late.
