The Dictionary Skills Capstone

Nine derived forms, nine word-types each, dozens of new roots — and now the real test: opening an actual page of Hans Wehr and reading it fluently, the way it was meant to be read. This final chapter walks through a complete worked example, root to entry, then asks you to do the same independently. From here, no root in Arabic should feel unapproachable.

Pacing: 60–75 min — a genuine capstone, not a quick lesson.

A worked Hans Wehr-style entry. Here's how a real entry reads, root ك-ت-ب, using the abbreviations you'll actually see on the page: k-t-b I kataba u to write; II kattaba to cause to write, make (someone) write; III kātaba to correspond with (someone); IV akhtaba to dictate; VI takātaba to correspond with one another; VII inkataba to be registered, enrolled; VIII iktataba to subscribe, enroll oneself; maṣdar kitābah writing; act. part. kātib writer, scribe; pass. part. maktūb written, prescribed, destined.

Every piece of that sentence is now something you can parse without help: the Roman numerals mark the form, the italic transliteration gives you the pattern, and “maṣdar,” “act. part.,” and “pass. part.” name exactly the word-types you studied across Part Four.

Quick check: without looking back, what form is ista‘mala (‘he used’), and what does that form usually mean? (Form X — seeking, requesting, or considering; here, ‘putting to use.’)

لَا أُصَدِّقُ أَنَّنَا نَسْتَطِيعُ قِرَاءَةَ صَفْحَةِ قَامُوسٍ كَامِلَةٍ الْآنَ!

lā uṣaddiqu annanā nastaṭīu qirā’ata ṣafḥati qāmūsin kāmilatin-l-ān!

I can't believe we can read a whole dictionary page now!

YŪSUF

كُلُّ جِذْرٍ صَارَ مَفْهُومًا بِمُجَرَّدِ مَعْرِفَةِ الْأَوْزَانِ.

kullu jidhrin ṣāra mafhūman bi-mujarradi ma‘rifati-l-awzān.

Every root has become understandable just by knowing the forms.

MARYAM

بَدَأْنَا بِـ“السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ”، وَانْتَهَيْنَا هُنَا!

bada’nā bi-“as-salāmu ‘alaykum”, wa-ntahaynā huna!

We began with ‘as-salāmu ‘alaykum,’ and we've ended up here!

YŪSUF

وَهَذِهِ لَيْسَتْ نِهَايَةً، بَلْ أَدَاةٌ نَسْتَخْدِمُهَا طَوَالَ حَيَاتِنَا.

wa hādhihi laysat nihāyatan, bal adātun nastakhdimuhā ṭawāla ḥayātinā.

And this isn't an ending, but a tool we'll use our whole lives.

03 — CORE WORDS

ن ۚ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ
