Part 6 · Chapter Forty-Eight · Qur'ānic Vocabulary Extension

أَكْثَرُ الْكَلِمَاتِ وُرُودًا

The Most Frequent Words in the Qur'ān

Forty-seven chapters gave you the grammar. This chapter — the first of a new closing sequence — gives you the single highest-leverage vocabulary list in the whole language: fourteen words so frequent that, once they're second nature, an enormous share of every page of the Qur'ān opens up before you.

Every Arabic passage has a small circle button — click it to hear it read aloud using your browser's own Arabic voice.

BY THE END OF THIS CHAPTER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO

TEACHER NOTES
Pacing: 40 min
Prerequisite check: None specific — this works as a standalone frequency drill.
Watch out for: These 14 words alone cover a disproportionate share of Qur'ānic text — worth memorising as a fixed list, not just reading through once.
02 — LISTEN & REPEAT

حِوَارٌDialogue

Maryam and Yūsuf notice something every reader of the Qur'ān eventually notices: a small set of words carries an enormous share of the text.

MARYAM
يَا يُوسُفُ، لَاحَظْتُ أَنَّ نَفْسَ الْكَلِمَاتِ تَتَكَرَّرُ فِي كُلِّ سُورَةٍ تَقْرِيبًا!
yā yūsufu, lāḥaẓtu anna nafsa-l-kalimāti tatakarraru fī kulli sūratin taqrīban!
O Yūsuf, I noticed the same words repeat in almost every sūrah!
YŪSUF
صَحِيحٌ! كَلِمَاتُ اللَّهِ وَرَبِّ وَالنَّاسِ وَالَّذِينَ تَجِدُهَا فِي كُلِّ صَفْحَةٍ تَقْرِيبًا.
ṣaḥīḥ! kalimātu -llāhi wa rabbi wa-n-nāsi wa-lladhīna tajiduhā fī kulli ṣafḥatin taqrīban.
That's right! Words like Allāh, Rabb, an-nās and alladhīna — you find them on nearly every page.
MARYAM
إِذًا لَوْ حَفِظْتُ هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَاتِ الْقَلِيلَةَ، سَأَفْهَمُ جُزْءًا كَبِيرًا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟
idhan law ḥafiẓtu hādhihi-l-kalimāti-l-qalīlata, sa-afhamu juz’an kabīran mina-l-qur’ān?
So if I memorise these few words, I’ll understand a large part of the Qur’ān?
YŪSUF
بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ! هٰذَا هُوَ سِرُّ هَذَا الدَّرْسِ — أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ كَلِمَةً تَفْتَحُ لَكِ الْكِتَابَ كُلَّهُ.
bi-idhni-llāh! hādhā huwa sirru hādhā-d-dars — arba‘a ‘ashrata kalimatan taftaḥu laki-l-kitāba kullah.
With Allah's permission! That's the secret of this lesson — fourteen words that open the whole Book for you.
03 — CORE WORDS

This chapter's whole purpose is teaching high-frequency vocabulary, so — unlike earlier chapters — there's no separate "also in the texts" gap here worth patching; the surrounding example sentences use ordinary connective words (كَانُوا، وَالَّذِينَ، لَعَلَّكُمْ) already covered by earlier chapters' grammar.

04 — READING THE SOURCE

وَقْفَةٌ قُرْآنِيَّةٌQur'ān Connection

A single verse built almost entirely from words on today's list — a good test of how far fourteen words can take you.

SŪRAT AL-BAQARAH — 2:21
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become mindful of Him.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ
yā ayyuhā-n-nās
O mankind
رَبَّكُمُ
rabbakumu
your Lord
الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ
alladhī khalaqakum
who created you
لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
la‘allakum tattaqūn
that you may be mindful of Him
Count them: النَّاسُ، رَبَّ، الَّذِي، الَّذِينَ، تَتَّقُونَ — five of today's fourteen words in a single verse. This is exactly why this vocabulary is worth memorising first.
